Pregnancy Story Part 1: Who knew….there’s TWO!

My husband Matt and I found out we were pregnant early January 2023. While we were trying for kiddos, we didn’t think it would have QUITE so soon. It was a bit of a shock to find out we were pregnant after just one month of seriously trying. Needless to say, we were excited but also overwhelmed and kind of scared. There were so many new things to learn, research to be had and lists to make!

After about 5 at-home tests, I was convinced that I was ACTUALLY pregnant. So, I scheduled my first doctors appointment to verify the pregnancy. After weeks of waiting and second guessing and more pregnancy tests, the 10-week mark rolled around and we went to our appointment.

Should dad attend the pregnancy verification appointment?

Call me naïve, but I didn’t know if Matt needed to be at this appointment. I didn’t know what it really consisted of, how much we’d be able to see, etc. Eventually we decided that Yes Matt should attend the appointment and BOY are we glad he did!

How it went

This first appointment included an ultrasound and blood draw. First we went into the ultrasound. They attempted an external ultrasound on my belly, but the tech couldn’t quite see what she needed to so we moved on to an internal transvaginal ultrasound, which is most often what needs to happen at your first ultrasound. To our surprise the tech goes “Yeah, so I couldn’t quite see before, which is why I wanted to do an internal, because there are TWO babies.”

Utter. shock. And silence from me. I’m pretty sure Matt’s mouth hit the floor. I’m quite sure one or both of us let out an “oh, shit!”

In the year or so leading up to trying for babies, I kept saying, give me twins first if I’m going to have them. That way I won’t know anything different and it will be just as “hard” as raising a singleton.

So….the moral of the story?

Be careful what you wish for. But in all seriousness, we are more than grateful and excited for our two sweet baby boys. Matt has always wanted definitely more than one child, and I’ve always wanted two. Twins are such a blessing!

Until Next Time,
Sam
